In addition to property level analyses, taking a value added approach to potential silvicultural treatments allows for an objective analysis between future value added by the treatment and present cost of the treatment. The marginal rate of return calculation allows for making silvicultural investment decisions using sound objective scientific analysis stand by stand rather than making a decision to pay for a treatment on all or most stands. It also allows for objectively deciding between different potential treatments and staying within budgets. When timberland is bought or sold, both buyer and seller need to become comfortable with timber value. Since timber is not an annual crop, but may grow 30 plus years before harvest, it is important to have good estimates of what timber values today will grow into in the next 10-25 years.
