Silvicultural Prescriptions and Audits
When landowners first began planting southern pines in the South there were few silvicultural options. Now, however, a manager is faced with regeneration options that include level of genetic improvement, seedling source, site preparation method, fertilization, and herbaceous weed control, plus planting density and arrangement. Older age plantations need decisions made on timing and intensity of thinning, whether to fertilize and if so, when, with what material, and at what rate, whether to spend money on woody release or not, and ultimately timing of final harvest. The effect of both regeneration treatments and older age treatments is complex because some treatments impact the effects of others. Choices made impact costs, growth, timing and amount of total wood and product production, and ultimately return on investment (ROI). Our staff has more than 40 years of experience studying silvicultural treatments in both academic and operational settings across the South. We make silvicultural prescriptions for stands across the range of ages for our clients tailored to their specific objectives. In addition, we perform third party silvicultural audits for organizations that require an independent check that they are meeting their stated silvicultural objectives at various levels of stand development.
