About Us

At Smarter Forestry our mission is to provide landowners and timber managers with better information that will enable them to make Smarter decisions.  We work with Timberland Management Organizations (TIMOs), REITs, government agencies, and private landowners.  While no two of these groups have the same objectives for their forest land ownership, they share a need for accurate quantitative information on what they own as well as quantification of the short and long term responses of alternative management strategies for their stands.  The SMART System for Timberland Management was developed by Smarter Forestry to provide that needed information for making an informed decision.  That is practicing Smarter Forestry. Dr. Shiver also provides expert witness testimony, and professional, experienced, guidance to parties involved in legal disputes.

Barry D. Shiver

Smarter Forestry was formed by Barry Shiver who combines academic and operational expertise in forest management.  He was a long-time faculty member at the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of Georgia (UGA), and retired as Professor Emeritus of Forest Management.  He developed the graduate and undergraduate inventory course taught at Warnell and co-authored the textbook (Sampling Techniques for Forest Resource Inventory) used at collegiate forestry schools across the country.  Barry was the Director of the Plantation Management Research Cooperative (PMRC) at UGA.  He became an expert at silvicultural treatments for southern pines and developed growth and yield models that incorporated treatment responses. He taught silviculture and developed a graduate course in Intensive Forest Management that is still taught and considered relevant.  Barry is now applying his expertise in these multiple disciplines for the benefit of clients of Smarter Forestry. Barry is the president of the Georgia Chapter of ACF, the Association of Consulting Foresters.
